Shelley,

A few pointers you might want to look out for when looking for insurance. Firstly, as you plan to be travelling for up to a year you want to make sure you have a high medical maximum coverage limit. For example, if you are travelling to the USA and only have say $25,000 USD or even a £25,000 GBP policy maximum limit, this will not really be enough for the USA. The USA is the most expensive destination in terms of medical treatment, and if you need coverage for 1 year you will want and need a higher limit. To put things in perspective, just a simple ambulance from A to B can cost well over $1,000.

So my main advice would be to study where you will be travelling to and find a policy that provide enough medical coverage for that destination

Hope this helps, will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Hi RJLMason,
many thanks for your reply.
I have now fixed up some work in Australia, and plan to take time off flying by mailplane into the outback. How would I go about ensuring I have enough cover?

Well - things to look out for:

Medical Max - $100K plus if possible
Prescriptions - get some coverage
Emergency Evac - $25K plus
Repatriation - $10K plus
Excess/ Deductible - depends on what you want to pay

It depends on what type of policy you go for, you can get a travel policy that will have different benefits to a health insurance plan
